Varanasi International Airport is located at the famous tourist city and Hindu pilgrimage town of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. It is officially renamed after Lal Bahadur Shastri in 2005. It became an international airport by 2012 and it connects to Katmandu in Nepal.
In May 2018, the airport runway expansion project which involves extending the current runway length of 2,750m to 4,075m to ensure landing of big cargo and Boeing planes at the airport. However, it will also include a underpass- highway – a four lane road (NH-56) leaving it intact.
