Tiruchirapalli International Airport is the third largest and fastest growing airport in the state of Tamil Nadu. It became an international airport in 2012. It was an old airport served during the British period. The AAI has sought around 510 acres of land for the current expansion of runways. Of the total about 188 acres are dry land, 116 acres wetland, 164.68 acres defence land, 40.59 acres wasteland and 5.80 is with Hindu religious and Charitable Trust. To facilitate fast process on airport expansion a joint technical advisory committee involving the departments of agriculture, public works department and revenue had been formed chaired by P. Kumar, Trichy MP.

In May 2017, the state government has accorded administrative approval for land acquisition for the Tiruchi airport runway expansion project. The state government’s sanction is for over 300 acre of land, including dry and wet lands, besides 40 acre of poromboke land

The airport is setting up its new intergrated passenger terminal with new apron and new air traffic control facility with an investment of ₹ 9500 million. It also include associated taxiways, isolation bay to make the airport suitable for handling five wide-body (Code-E) and 10 narrow-body (Code-C) aircraft, control room, supporting equipment rooms, setting up of terminal radar, radar simulation, among others.

As of July 2020, the project is in construction and is likely to go operational by March 2022.
