Salem Airport was built in 1993 with an investment of Rs. 60 million with contributions from public, Salem Steel Plant and other industrialists. Vayudoot, the erstwhile regional service of Air India was supposed to operate flights between Salem and Chennai. However, its service was wound up. Later in 1996, NEPC Airlines started operations of Chennai-Salem-Coimbatore round trip but abandoned it in 3 months due to non patronage. Similarly, Kingfisher too tried to operate in this route but stalled it soon.
As of 2015, the airport is used by flying schools, since there are no commercial flights.
In March 2018, the airport is set to acquire 570 acres for expansion programme. Now after a long break, Trujet is set to start operations to connect Salem airport to Chennai.
