In August 2017, the airport has commissioned an upgraded passenger terminal of from 6,700 sq mtr to 14,500 sq mtr building of Jammu airport. It will also improve passenger handling capability. The Jammu airport belongs to the Indian Air Force, and Airports Authority of India maintains a civil enclave for civil aircraft operations.
In June 2019, the central government has given environment clearance for the expansion of runway at the Jammu Airport which will entail an investment of Rs 92 crore The existing runway is of 2042 metre in length. The runway is proposed to be extended in order allow the operations of wide bodied aircrafts such as B-321.
In October 2021, land required for the expansion programme has been transferred to AAI. As per reports, the land to the tune of 974 Kanal has been transferred in village Rakh Raipur, tehsil Jammu South free of cost to the Airport Authority of India under the National Civil Aviation Policy 2016.
