About the Airport:
Agartala Airport – also known as Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport /Sinherbil Airport is maintained by AAI is the second busiest airport in north east. As of 2020, the airport is undertaking various standard improvement measures to become international airport.
Currently, three airlines operate 14 flights to Kolkatta, Guwahati and Delhi routes. The state government had already provided 72 acres of land to AAI for construction of the new terminal building, runway and other necessary infrastructure. It is the third largest airport in North East India and 31st busiest airport in India.
The airport terminal expansion will feature six bays, one hangar, 20 check-in counters, five customs counters and ten immigration counters. It will have an inline baggage system, a full-body scanner machine and a solar power unit. In addition, it will be decorated with miniature sculptures of Unakoti’s Tripurasundari Temple.
The project cost is estimated at ₹ 3,380 million. A hanger is also being constructed at a cost of ₹ 30 crore where a 321 model Airbus can be kept at night in case of necessity. The work for construction of the taxiway to the Hanger is progressing rapidly. It is learnt that it will be completed before the inauguration of the terminal building which is slated to be commissioned by September 2020.
