About the Airport :
Agatti Airport – which has one of the beautiful runway in the world is located on Agatti island in Lakshadweep territory of India. It has a capacity of 150 passengers. Currently, air services are operated to Kochi, Bangalore and Chennai.
The airstrip was constructed during 1987−88 and is designed for operation of Dornier 228 type of aircraft. The airstrip is 1204 meters long. The airstrip cannot be expanded due to lack of availability of land. Construction of bridge with the adjoining Kalpati Island will destroy the turtle colony and was duly abandoned due to ecological reasons. So now, there are plans to expand the existing runway by 336 metres in the south-west direction over the lagoon towards Kalpati Island without interconnecting the two islands. The entire project is likely to cost about Rs 1,500 crore. Once completed, the runway will be long enough for ATR-72 to operate.
The airport can handle 150 passengers at a time.
