Kerala government provides in-principle clearance for Sabarimala airport

Kerala cabinet has given an in-principle approval to develop a greenfield airport at Sabarimala near Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. The proposed new airport will reduce traffic congestion during the festival season at Ayyappa temple in Sabarimala between November and January. The state government has asked Kerala State Industrial Development Corp (KSIDC) to conduct a study on the airport project. It may be noted, in November 2016, the union government agreed to issue a no objection certificate (NOC) for an airstrip near Sabarimala.

In October 2019, the state government of Kerala has decided to go ahead with the acquisition of Cheruvally Estate for constructing the airport. The government has hired Louis Berger Consulting as consultant for the airport project
